PHIXER for bedroom producers: free phase repair when home mixes hollow on phones
Bedroom mixes often sound full on studio headphones and collapse on phone speakers, mono Bluetooth, or laptop mono. That is usually stacked doubles, stereo FX returns, sample layers, or dual-mic guitars fighting in L/R. Free phase-repair helps after polarity and timing are honest. It is not a free widener, and it does not replace a mono-check habit.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not time-align, not a simple polarity invert, and not a stereo imager. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights on buses you must keep stereo. Roundup angle: many free polarity / invert tools stop at flip-and-hope; PHIXER targets leftover band-by-band cancellation after those basics.
Why bedroom mixes fail on phone fold
- Vocal doubles and Haas-style delays. Hard-panned doubles that feel huge in cans cancel mid vowels on phone mono. Related: chorus / mod vs phase and free polarity tools vs PHIXER.
- Stereo FX returns under a mono vocal. Wide reverbs and delays look lush in headphones, then hollow the center on fold. Prefer mono-safe sends for critical voice.
- Sample stacks and layered kicks / basses. Multiple stereo samples of the same hit with tiny offsets eat low end on mono. Solo in mono before you chase EQ.
- Dual-mic guitars or amp + DI. Same performance on two paths with millisecond offsets. Headphones keep the image; phones cancel body. Same family as amp + DI workflows: polarity and delay first.
- Skipping the phone check. Mixing only on headphones. Sixty seconds of mono audition (utility flip or real phone speaker) catches most hollows.
Fast bedroom mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Solo the mix bus or master (not only headphones). Flip a utility to mono, or play the bounce on a phone speaker.
- A/B vocal doubles muted vs open. Note what disappears: chest, consonants, air.
- Mute stereo FX returns under the vocal. Note whether body returns.
- Solo layered kick / bass samples one at a time. Note which layer eats weight on fold.
- Confirm on a real phone speaker or single earbud. Correlation meters help; phones tell the truth for listeners.
Honest order of fixes (before spectral phase rotation)
1. One hero path for critical low end and vocals
Do not leave three kick samples and two bass layers all open if they fight. Pick a hero. Stacked identical energy is the fastest hollow on fold.
2. Polarity if a path flips
Interfaces, some amp sims, and DI/amp blends invert. Flip Ø when body returns immediately. Guide: when not to use PHIXER (polarity first).
3. Timing / delay-align doubles and DI+amp
Nudge samples and doubles so transients line up before you chase width. Free polarity tools and manual delay beat spectral tools here.
4. Prefer mono-safe delivery for social and phone cuts
TikTok / Reels / Shorts and many embeds fold aggressively. Keep critical voice and kick correlated. Put width in sides that survive fold, not in fighting mics. Related: TikTok / Reels / Shorts mono fold.
5. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a printed stereo bed or FX return must stay stereo and fold still hollows a band after the steps above, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with mono A/B. Watch the mono demo and YouTube tutorial.
Bedroom path types
| Setup | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Vocal doubles / Haas delay | Vowels thin on phone | Mute one; polarity; shorten delay |
| Stereo FX under vocal | Fine in cans, hollow on phone | Mono-safe send; less width |
| Layered kick / bass samples | Weight disappears on fold | One hero layer; polarity |
| Amp + DI guitar | Body cancels when both open | Polarity; delay-align; levels |
| Stereo synth / pad bed | Huge in headphones, gone on phone | Mono-check; center critical mid |
When free PHIXER belongs in a bedroom toolkit
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (printed FX return, stereo pad, stereo guitar bus), not a mono vocal you fake-widened.
- Hero levels, polarity, and timing are cleaned up, but fold still hollows a band of the spectrum.
- You can A/B mono with the plugin bypassed and hear clearer body without wrecking the image.
- You are building a mono-check habit, not using PHIXER to paper over three fighting kick samples.
- Budget is zero: free download on Gumroad (Win/Mac/Linux · VST3/CLAP/AU).
Free plugin roundup angle (honest)
Many bedroom-producer free roundups list polarity invert, simple correlators, and basic mono utilities. Those remain step one. PHIXER sits after them: residual spectral L/R repair when polarity and timing are already correct and the print must stay stereo. Compare: free polarity tools vs time-align vs PHIXER.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chest thins when doubles open | Mute / polarity / shorter Haas | Stacked identical speech |
| Kick weight gone with second sample | One hero; polarity | Dual-path low-end overlap |
| Fine in headphones, thin on phone | Mono utility; phone speaker check | Headphones ≠ phone fold |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono vocal alone is dull | Gain / EQ / mic placement | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not mono-auditioned the mix bus yet.
- The fix is obviously one hero layer, polarity, or quieter doubles.
- You want PHIXER to make vocals louder, wider, or to replace EQ / compression. Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is level or tone.
- Full list: when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Solo mix in mono → one hero low-end / vocal path → polarity if a path flips → align doubles and DI+amp → mono-safe FX under voice → phone-speaker check → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → confirm again on a phone.
